Happy Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is usually a day of family, everyone being together and celebrating mom. Because the role of being a mom, is one of the most potentially valuable things one could do. Whether you’ve been a working mom or a stay at home mom, the impact you have on your children’s lives is real, and nobody replaces Mom. Who your children grow up to become, how their lives impact society and future generations to follow is a direct influence of the multi-tasking - always knows best - remembers every scar, scrape and scratch - Superstar of the house… mom.

In some ways, I feel awkward writing about Mother’s Day. I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with my own mom ever since her marriage with my dad ended in divorce, and she left us when I was in 6th grade. We’re now estranged and have been for quite some time. It was brutal to grow up that way, and the repercussions of her brokenness that led to her hurtful decisions is something I’ve wrestled with even into my adulthood.

Even so, I’m grateful for the point of view and perspective I have about motherhood. I believe that society highly undermines the importance of it.  I’m grateful for my wife, Brenda, who’s been an amazing, selfless and tireless mother to our children over the years. I’m grateful that her influence over raising our daughters have enabled them to grow up to be outstanding mothers as well.

Even after the sadness I’ve felt over the missing relationship I have with my own mom, I still find myself grateful for her. I’m grateful she gave my brother and I life. I’m also grateful for the fond memories I do have of her as a child, even though our lives ended up going separate ways.

Mother’s Day is to honor the women who nurture, love and support us. Whether you’re spending the day with an upbeat celebration, or in need of quiet reflection, know that I am celebrating all you amazing Mothers out there as well. I am thankful for your impact on humanity and your daily sacrifices of love do not go unnoticed.

Happy Mother’s Day!
